A minimum of thirteen passengers perish and 98 injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” stated the country's president.

The leader announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose term finished the year before. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a significant increase of its duties in civilian works. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked persistent apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party demanded an prompt halt in the development and management of all similar projects.

This pause was suggested until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the situation "requires swift accountability."

In response, the president insisted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these strategic projects.
