Israel Attacks Iran as Explosions Heard in the Capital

Early Saturday, accounts surfaced of major explosions rocking the Iranian capital, following claims from Israel that it had carried out a preemptive strike.

Powerful Explosions and Smoke Reported in Central Tehran

According to on-the-ground reports, two powerful explosions were audible in Tehran on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, two plumes of dense smoke were seen billowing over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.

“The type of these blasts suggests that this is a missile attack,” one news agency stated, though it did not immediately provide additional information.

Background: Rising Strains and Prior Developments

The incident takes place against a background of severely escalated tensions in the region. Key developments preceding this attack involve:

  • US Military Buildup: A significant buildup of US naval forces in the region, featuring the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
  • Diplomatic Negotiations: Latest discussions between the US and Iranian officials on Tehran's atomic program ended inconclusively, with indications of more talks planned.
  • Official Rhetoric: Before the attack, a senior US official had described Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and delivered threats regarding its missile program.
  • Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a deadline of roughly two weeks had been presented to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or face serious repercussions.

Iranian Response

In response to earlier allegations, Iranian officials had charged the United States of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. They dismissed claims about weapons development and casualty figures as unfounded.

These developments remains fluid, with additional reports expected as the situation develops.
