In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The September uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the New Political Partnership
According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's established political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Consultations Taking Place
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of major political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
